There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling den gambling is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are based in a relatively tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect spot, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are apparently required to pass, there are methods around this, as is correct of many borders.
The original Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling den, contains 150 slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel compound that features many amenities in addition to the casino, which contains 10,000 square feet of 130 slots and eighty eight table games.
